Due to the way our formatting tool works, Chapterly is enabled for end notes rather than traditional footnotes. An end note is similar to a footnote citation and is marked by a superscript number next to the phrase that needs clarification, documentation, or author’s credits.

Adding an end note at the end of a sentence, or paragraph will automatically generate itself as an end note citation on the Notes page in the Back Matter folder. Every end note citation added to a manuscript will be kept in numerical order on the Back Matter Notes page.

Furthermore, the end notes entered in a chapter will also be displayed by the chapter in which they were entered. Any end notes entered can also be edited by viewing the Notes page in the Back Matter folder. The best practice for adding an end note is to make it no longer than one paragraph.

How to Add an End Note Page in Your Back Matter

  1. To add an end note to a book, click on the ellipse {…} next to the Back Matter folder. A dialogue box will appear that allows the Notes and Biographical Note page to be selected. Select the Notes checkbox to add the end notes page to the back matter folder.

2. Once the end note page is added to the Back Matter folder, all end note notations added to the book will automatically appear on the Back Matter Notes page. The notations will appear in the order of the chapter, and the numerical placemark for the end note in each chapter.

How to Add a Notation Within Your Manuscript

  1. To add an end note notation to any place in a chapter, click on the superscript/end note icon located at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

2. The 'Add an End Note' dialogue box will open. Add the desired text in the box shown and click “Add note.”

3. An end note will appear at the place where the author has notated it:

4. Once an end note has been added to the manuscript, it can be edited on the Back Matter Notes page by clicking inside the text box of the citation you wish to edit:
