How to Select A Genre Category

Selecting a genre in Chapterly helps authors to format their books for the category selected with ease.

Updated over a week ago

Selecting a genre is a very important aspect of writing a book. Chapterly provides the tools to help authors select genre templates that make book writing and publishing for authors easy and intuitive.

The first signup on Chapterly automatically takes the user to a page to select the category and genre of their book. This information can be changed at any time. To edit the category and genre of the book, please log in to the Chapterly Dashboard. Select the book you want to change in the Library. Once the book is selected it will take you to the "Title" page. The Title page interface is the only way to change the information that appears on the title page. To select a category, click on the drop-down arrow that says "category" on the title page. You will have the option to choose: Kids & YA Fiction (Young Adult), Fiction, and Non-Fiction.

Choosing a Non-Fiction Genre

To choose Non-Fiction as your initial category, please click on the category dropdown arrow and select "Non-Fiction."

The options that can be selected from the Non-Fiction Genre section are Art, Architecture & Photography; Astrology, Divination & Tarot; Biographies & Memoirs, Business & Investing; Cooking, Food & Wine; Crafts & Hobbies; Current Affairs & Politics; Diet, Health & Fitness; Education & Reference; Engineering; History; Home & Garden; Humor; Music, Film & Performing Arts; Nature; New Age & Alternative Beliefs; Parenting & Family, Pets; Philosophy, Politics & Political Science, Role Playing & Fantasy Games; Science; Computers & Technology; Self-Help & Relationships; Social Sciences; Sports, Study Aids & Test Preps; True Crime; Travel; Weddings and Women's Studies. Select the Genre that matches the type of book you want to write.

Any changes that you make to the title page of the book will be automatically saved by Chapterly.

Choosing a Fiction Genre

First, choose "Fiction" from the category drop-down menu. Then click on the Genre menu to select the Genre you want. The options for the Fictional genres are: Thriller & Suspense, Historical Fiction, Romance, Mystery & Crime, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Movie, TV, Literary Fan Fiction, and Contemporary fiction.

How to Select Children's Categories and Genres

To select a children's category please click on the category menu and select "Kids & YA Fiction (Young Adult)."

Then select the next level genre of either Kids or Teens and YA fiction:

Once you select the main children's genre, you can now select the subcategory for that genre. If Kids is selected, you will get some options for age groups.

If Teens & YA Fiction is the selected genre, the next subcategory will need to be selected. The subcategories available for Teens & YA fiction are Fantasy and Adventure, Mysteries & Thrillers, Sci-Fi, Life & Relationships, Historical Fiction, Coming of Age, and Drama.

Happy Writing!
